Families are catching on to Las Cabos as an ideal vacation spot! For most, it’s a short plane ride away and offers:
- Endless sunshine
- Ocean views (and fun!)
- Sandy beaches
- Tropical fish
- Water sports
- Yummy food
What’s the best way to get all this with little effort? A family resort.
How Did We Decide?
Over 100 resorts, hotels, villas, and golf clubs cluster the creamy, white beaches of Los Cabos—the Baja coast from Cabo San Lucas at Land’s End along the Sea of Cortez to the colonial town of San Jose del Cabo.
To make our kid-friendly list, these resorts had to be:
- Recommended by parents – We reviewed travel sites like TripAdvisor®, Yelp, and Booking.com to see how families ranked resorts, and we searched popular parenting blogs to see what was working for families.
- Fun for kids
- Convenient (with kitchens, plus on-site dining options)
- Comfortable (with air conditioning, extra beds, etc.)
Many resorts popular with families offer activities and amenities to make your stay comfortable, easy, and fun. Yet only a handful meet our number-one kid-friendly requirement: safe beaches.
Take it from the family travel experts at Ciao Bambino!™: “When choosing where to stay, pick a hotel wisely if hitting the beach is on your list. Only a select few have swimmable beaches in their backyard.”
Why Swimmable Beaches Matter in Cabo
Visitors are often surprised to find most Cabo beaches don’t allow swimming.
Why is this?
Off the point of the Baja peninsula, an ocean and a gulf come together, mixing currents. This can cause undertow and riptides—trouble for swimmers.
The Pacific Ocean surges on the west side of Land’s End, making those waters too dangerous to swim in.
On the east side of Land’s End is the calmer Sea of Cortez. A tranquil bay embraces the marina for the city of Cabo San Lucas. Yet even on the Sea of Cortez, many beaches are off limits because of rough surf and rocky shores.
This may sound a little confusing. Don’t worry! We have you covered. All the resorts we recommend are safe—plus convenient, comfortable, and, most important, fun for kids!
The Best Family-Friendly Resorts in Los Cabos
Our first recommendations are in Cabo San Lucas, clustered together on a stretch of Medano Beach that’s beyond the downtown bar scene.
1. Villa del Arco Beach Resort & Spa
The five-star Villa del Arco Beach Resort & Spa offers beautiful villas on the sweeping—and swimmable—Medano Beach. A villa suite is better for families than your average hotel room because it has a kitchen and often more than one bedroom!
Cooking for your family is a great budget option, but if you’re not feeling it, order in or enjoy the four restaurants, including a taco bar. Keep in mind, there’s a dress code for Neptune, with its fine French cuisine.
Villa del Arco’s Kids in Paradise club offers supervised activities all day long (for a fee).
Villa del Arco’s concierge services are great. Even its swimming pool has a concierge, in case you run out of sunscreen or need a hat! When booking activities for the whole family through the concierge, ask for Cabo Expeditions! Our Cabo Submarine is great for all ages, and bungee jumping and parasailing are a thrill for older kids.
2. Villa La Estancia Beach Resort & Spa Cabo San Lucas
Villa La Estancia is a great choice if your vacation budget is a bit more flexible. These privately owned villas are not available through Expedia®, Orbitz®, or Hotels.com®. Book a huge, one-, two, or three-bedroom villa with kitchen, living room, and washer/dryer—plenty of room for the entire family.
Infinity pools with waterfalls and grottos add elegance to the already beautiful Cabo beach setting. The kids will love swimming and exploring while you get pampered by on-site restaurants and private chefs, as well as a 24-hour concierge service.
And the town of Cabo San Lucas is a beautiful 10-minute walk along the beach!
3. Casa Dorada Los Cabos
Close to town and the marina, Casa Dorada is on swimmable Medano Beach. The marina hosts artistic performances that are free to the public—great cultural exposure for kids. According to the family travel bloggers at My Little Nomads, “The hotel does share the stretch of beach with a few party bars but it’s never that crazy…”
The resort has two swimming pools (one just for kids), a supervised Kid’s Place, four restaurants, and a spa (perfect for adults who want to relax).
Walk to town to give your kids a feel for a different culture and way of life.
Can’t travel without Fido? Casa Dorada welcomes pets. Even your dog can get a massage!
Our next few recommendations are on The Corridor, the stretch of shoreline that runs northeast from Cabo San Lucas to San Jose del Cabo—often called the “Gold Coast.”
4. One&Only Palmilla
This ultra-luxury resort 18 miles from Cabo San Lucas overlooks one of the other swimmable beaches on the cape: Playa Palmilla. Away from the party scene, the secluded setting provides guests (think John Travolta and Jennifer Aniston) a luxurious and tranquil vibe.
The resort was given the Oyster award for Best Kid-Friendly Hotels in Mexico. It has four restaurants, two swimming pools, a spa, and tennis courts. A KidsOnly Club provides supervised play, like Art Lab, so parents can take advantage of the One&Only’s spa and golf course for a change of pace! A 27-hole golf course sets off the resort as a green gem in the desert.
5. Hilton® Los Cabos Beach and Golf Resort
With world-class amenities, the Hilton Los Cabos Beach and Golf Resort is located on a swim-safe inlet on the Sea of Cortez, and it’s a Four Diamond hotel.
The resort has two deluxe pools, golf, and a spa. The infinity pool shimmers off into the horizon, while the Dolphin Terrace Pool overlooks the Sea of Cortez. A pool concierge is always on-hand with towel service, iPods, drinks, and reading material.
Cabo Kids is a free, supervised service that keeps kids busy with activities like making piñatas and learning to cook. Vera in Hilton’s MomVoyage blog writes, “As a parent, I especially appreciated that the club offered organized activities (usually 1-2 per day) that allowed our children to experience some of the local culture.“
6. Welk Resorts® Sirena Del Mar
Welk Resorts Sirena Del Mar offers an affordable family choice. A swimmable—though pebbly, not sandy—beach is nestled in a pristine cove below the cliffside hotel.
Kids get their own infinity pool and enjoy a fitness center and game room. Fun activities are ongoing, like salsa dancing and Mexican bingo, paddle boarding, and Inspired Adventures—guided tours off-site. Or you can take a taxi into town on your own.
Sirena del Mar is only 4.5 miles away from the Cabo San Lucas marina and downtown, but quieter by far.
Don’t Need a Swimmable Beach?
If a swimmable beach isn’t a priority for you, we recommend two resorts in Cabo San Lucas. They’ve earned “kid-friendly” kudos from other travel specialists as well, like Oyster.com.
7. Hacienda del Mar Vacation Club
A resort resembling a Mexican village, Hacienda Del Mar has a child-friendly pool, complete with a fountain and a small water-slide. Although there aren’t ocean views, a bright indoor space plus a lawn with a shaded trampoline highlight a cool Kids Club.
Although riptides rule out swimming on the beach itself, an infinity pool provides a grand view of its beauty.
8. The Ridge at Playa Grande
At the Ridge Luxury Villas at Playa Grande, kids enjoy their own rooftop pool with waterslide, and Cabo San Lucas’ marina is just 5 to 10 minutes away on foot. So is the famously swimmable Medano Beach! Public displays of art and musical performances keep the place lively. You can explore the abundance of restaurants and shops, walk to the natural history museum, and experience any fiestas going on in town.
The Sea of Cortez’s spectacular beauty, Mexican culture, and endless opportunities for adventure make Cabo the perfect place for a family vacation.
Choose to escape from the world with your kids, and find everything you need in an all-inclusive resort, or take advantage of their connections to explore a new place!
