My friend Debbie and I have taken the zodiac whale watching boat many times. Our captain every time has been Jose Luis Calvario Hernandez. You wouldn’t find a more professional captain with such expertise of the marine life. No matter how fast we may be going, we have had complete faith in Jose. Last year we had a family of humpbacks around our boat. The baby was about 3 weeks old and the parents were singing. It was fabulous, as has been every tour in the past 4 years. Ask for Jose when you book your whale tour.

My wife & I decided to go take a chance with this company because we heard a lot of positive feedback. My wife made the reservations over the phone. Our instructor for the SNUBA was named “Marcos.” Marcos spoke English fluently which made our experience AMAZING!!! Having never experienced going underwater with a breathing apparatus is was a bit alarming but our instructor, made us calm and reassured us there would be no problems and he would be by our side for the duration of the activity. We saw puffer fish, starfish, all sorts of kinds of sea water life we never have witnessed in their own habitat. My entire family was elated because of the courteous and soft spoken instructor.

My overall experience was beyond my expectations and would highly recommend this to all of my family and friends who visit Los cabos.Thank you for the most amazing experience!!!

In this age of greenwashing, it’s hard to know what’s the real deal and what’s corporate “adspeak” when it comes to eco-tourism. At Cabo Expeditions, we work hard to make as little impact on the natural environment as possible. And we stay ahead of the pack with new and unique tours no one else in Cabo can offer.

Our new multi-day expeditions by land and by sea are a first. Cabo Expeditions is the only Cabo company to offer anything like Whales of Baja and Sea of Cortez Islands Expedition. Los Cabos is just the tip of the peninsula – there’s so much more to Baja. Why not have it all when you’re here?

In addition to whale-watching and snorkeling day trips, we offer the only Sea Trek and SNUBA experiences in Cabo—unique and easy underwater adventures for all ages and levels of ability, from your pre-teen to your grandmother.

As we explore together this amazing land of desert and whales, rocky islands and lush reefs, we honor it with sustainable practices, from recycling to beach cleanup.

Educating our travelers to a greater awareness of how to leave a place better than we found it is part of our mission. Our travelers learn why it’s important to replace a rock or a shell where we found it. Our naturalists nurture an awareness of wonders you wouldn’t even see on your own.

As a local Cabo San Lucas-based company, we can afford to tailor our trips to the needs of the environment as well as our guests. Our tours are not locked into a standard corporate formula. We are constantly tweaking the experience and shaping it to fit the conditions and needs and interests of the small groups we cater to.

Even though we’ve grown from two boats in 1997 to 12 boats today and 60 English-speaking employees, we hold true to our original company philosophy, emphasizing:

safety for our participants;

unconditioned concern about the marine environment; and

a love for the natural history in the region and professionalism in everything we do.

Our certified guides have extensive knowledge about the Sea of Cortez and its marine life, offering you an enriching learning experience. In addition, each and every guide is a PADI-certified rescue diver and has an emergency response training to keep you and your family safe at all times.

No corporate manual can substitute for such intangibles as respect, honesty, professionalism, loyalty and going the extra mile that are the standard of our local, family-based company. We hope you’ll entrust us with your valuable holiday plans.

Only Cabo Expeditions offers these two underwater experiences that make it easy and fun for people of all ages to experience sea life up close and personal. Now you don’t have to be a certified scuba diver or experienced snorkeler to enjoy the colorful underwater world.

You don’t want to miss the spectacular and awe-inspiring underwater world just off the shore of Cabo San Lucas. Record numbers of marine species flourish where of the cool Pacific mingles with the warm Sea of Cortez—a sea that gets more sunlight than any other.

Cabo Expeditions lets people of no scuba training to have a fascinating yet easy underwater experience. These new technologies make it safe and easy for anyone.

If you like to snorkel, you’ll love SNUBA®! SNUBA® takes snorkeling to the next level – below the surface. Instead of carrying your air supply on your back, as scuba divers do, you breathe through a long hose connected to a tank at the surface. You can’t go any deeper than the hose allows, so there’s no worry about getting “the bends” and other concerns that scuba divers deal with.

That extra 10, 20 or 30 feet that you can go with SNUBA® opens up new scenarios of wildlife. Swim into an intimate zone with fish and turtles and oddball invertebrates.

Even easier than snorkeling or SNUBA® is Sea Trek®. If you can walk and breathe, you to can enter that underwater world without scuba gear. A helmet connects you by hose to an air supply on the surface. You just walk on the sea floor down to waters up to 30 feet deep (10 meters). Easy peasy! You just breathe normally. There’s no mechanics or math involved! Just a fun walk off the beach or down the ladder of our Sea Trek® platform.

Bring your underwater camera and get those up-close shots of tiny sea creatures that won’t come near the surface. Post your shots on Facebook – but you don’t have to tell anyone you’re not really a certified scuba diver.

Baja California is famous for three species of whales that come to three different habitats every winter—humpbacks, blue whales, and gray whales. To see all three you need to go from Cabo’s humpback mating grounds to Loreto up the inland coast for blues, and then across the peninsula to San Ignacio Lagoon, breeding grounds for gray whales. We’re doing just that this year in Cabo’s very first multi-day whale watching expedition.

Humpbacks enjoy the confluence of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez off Land’s End. An easy boat ride from Cabo San Lucas brings us into the festive breaching and flipper-slapping that make these such entertaining animals.

Then we’ll head up the modern highway in our air-conditioned van. Don’t worry! It’s not a dusty rough Baja 1000 Nascar track as you see on TV, but a smooth and scenic highway that criss-crosses the peninsula.

Our next stop will be the palm oasis town of Loreto, oldest mission in the New World. There the Loreto Marine Park on the east coast of Baja is a haven for all kinds of whales, not just the giant blues, largest animal in the world. The Sea of Cortez, a long arm of the Pacific, is renowned for its plankton-rich waters that draw marine mammals in droves.

Blue whales, world’s largest animal, consort among the rugged desert islands. There we often see minke whales, fin whales, orca killer whales, pilot whales, and rafts of athletic dolphins and curious-looking porpoises.

The famous mass migration of gray whales occurs every winter on the Pacific side of the peninsula, in the famous San Ignacio Lagoon. We’ll drive there and camp in luxury cabanas, taking pangas out to join the gray whales. This World Biosphere was the world’s first whale sanctuary and pride of Mexico. It’s also home to a dense array of wild birds, turtles, fish, and marine animals of every stripe.

Why settle for just one kind of whale, when you can see them all?

Why is the archipelago of remote, uninhabited islands in the Sea of Cortez called “Mexico’s Galapagos?” It’s an area that UNESCO deemed a World Heritage Site.

The UNESCO site called “The Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California” honors 244 islands and islets out of the total 922 counted in the Sea of Cortez, also called the Gulf of California.

Each island has been isolated for so long that plants and animals have developed unique adaptations. We’ll explore this hands-on laboratory for the study of natural selection with our multi-day expedition up the inland coast of Baja.

Just as Darwin’s finches developed differently on each of the Galapagos islands, so we see endemic species – seen nowhere else in the world – on each of these remote outposts of evolution.

Botanists have identified 28 island plants that grow nowhere else. Half are cacti, supporting a food web. Organ pipe cacti feed southern long-nosed bats with nectar from creamy flowers. A garnish of night moth adds protein, as do bees and fruit flies that drink themselves drunk and fall in and drown.

Gigantism and dwarfism are a couple of directions that evolution takes in isolation. We’ll see the enormous barrel cactus up to twelve feet tall. On Isla Santa Catalina, there’s a tinier version of the side-blotched lizard, notable for its colorful speckles of blue and gold. Its torso measures only 2-1/4 inches long—much smaller than mainland varieties.

The tiny lizard shares that island with another famous endemic reptile—the rattleless rattlesnake. Some speculate that the loss of a rattle allows the snake to sneak up on birds.

These unusual biological outcomes of isolation rank high with UNESCO:
“The Sea of Cortez and its islands have been called a natural laboratory for the investigation of speciation. Moreover, almost all major oceanographic processes occurring in the planet’s oceans are present in the property, giving it extraordinary importance for study.

The site is one of striking natural beauty in a dramatic setting formed by rugged islands with high cliffs and sandy beaches, which contrast with the brilliant reflection from the desert and the surrounding turquoise waters.

It is home to 695 vascular plant species, more than in any marine and insular property on the World Heritage List. Equally exceptional is the number of fish species: 891, 90 of them endemic. The site, moreover, contains 39% of the world’s total number of species of marine mammals and a third of the world’s marine cetacean species.”

Hiking, boating, kayaking and camping on these remote and pristine beaches, we’ll come to know firsthand why these islands are a world treasure.

Winter is for whales and sunshine. Whales are intelligent animals who—like you, maybe—find it’s worth a trip to get out of the cold. Humpbacks and gray whales find safe, warm breeding grounds in the waters off the tip of the Baja peninsula.

Our Cabo tours take you into the action when humpbacks come to frolic off Land’s End. We use Zodiac boats, made famous by Jacques Cousteau, ideal for marine biologists.

The original Zodiacs were built by the French aerospace company of the same name. The demand for these fast, safe and stable boats led to their manufacture by a number of companies under license.

Our modern Zodiacs are better than Cousteau’s. Instead of a flat bottom, our Zodiac have a V-shaped keel. This makes for a smoother ride without the slamming of Cousteau’s flat-hulled vessels when they sped over the tops of waves.

Comfort and safety is the rule for our tours, but we don’t lose sight of why Cousteau loved those Zodiacs. The ease of maneuvring and getting close to the action made it ideal for the world-famous biologist to observe the great mammals up close.

You’ll see the bright turquoise shapes just under the surface that signal the presence of a humpback. That’s what their long white flippers look like under the water. There’s a mighty cough when the dark hump breaks the water and blows a tall fountain of spray. It’s a thrill like no other.

Unless it’s when the athletic show-offs vault their mass into the air, much of their body clearing the water when they breach. It’s all part of the courtship dance that brings the whales to Baja.

Though the breeding whales don’t come here to feed, but to reproduce, hundreds of species of sea life do, making the Sea of Cortez “one of the richest seas in the world,” that drew Jacques Cousteau here years ago.
